Quartz Crystal Analyzer

The QCA922A is a new instrument developed for piezoelectric gravimetry in the ng to μg region and monitors the resonant frequency and resonant resistance of a Pt or Au coated AT-cut quartz crystal. The resonant frequency changes with the effective surface mass on the crystal and the resonant resistance changes with the viscosity of the material at the surface of the quartz crystal.

With the addition of a Bio-Logic potentiostat/galvanostat and a small optional DB9-8BNC cable the QCA922A becomes an Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Nanobalance (EQCN) system.  Using the Platinum or Gold coated resonator as the working electrode additional information is provided on potential, current, charge, resonant frequency (mass), and resonant resistance (viscosity)  simultaneously. This gives the researchers the ability to analyze electrochemical depositions, polymer films formation on electrodes, corrosion, adsorption and electrochemical reaction mechanisms. Other application areas include battery research, electroplating and biosensor development.

Frequency and resistance measurements

 

An application note [#13] describes the connection of a Bio-Logic potentiostat to the Quartz Crystal Nanobalance and the monitoring of mass changes during a polypyrrol film deposition experiment.

The QCA922A works with flowcell, well cell and dip cell.
